Almost one week in Piura

Saturday, December 7, 2024

Hello dear family and friends:

I made it to my first week here in Piura.  It has been a wonderful time and also very tiring and hurting, like I said before I did something to my back, but fortunately the massages here are so inexpensive that I was able to have 2 done already, one on Thursday and one today.  Finally with the one from today I am much better, I can bend and sit down without hurting.

Thursday we were in a District meeting, it was very instructional, I was asked to have the closing prayer in English. By the way, the meeting was in Spanish, and all the elders were Americans, the Urquizos were the only ones that did not speak English.  It is amazing to see the elders speak such good spanish. Part of the meeting is going over Preach My Gospel and then a progress report.

I have been going with the elders to do some shopping for Christmas and since they had to go to the Bank Iwas able to go and exchange some money and open a bank account, to be able to open YAPE, is like Venmo for us.  Everything is being paid with Yape.  We also went to  "el Mercado" . It is a regular market with tons of booths and also a lot of people selling outside. I ended up getting a little Christmas tree and some ornaments. Everything is much cheaper there and the elders knew how to get there. We use the Moto Taxis (I am attaching a picture) . They are motorcycles converted to kind of a tricycle and in the back 3 people can fit. Yes, the elders and me. 😀 They have learned how to lower the price of what they asked.

Let me tell you about Whatsapp is what they use for everything.  It is very rare that they use the regular line.  Even to make appointments, like the massage, I went to the website and there was a key to make the appointment and it took me to whatsapp.  I didn't have to talk to anyone and it was very easy and fast to get the answer.

I keep learning what my duties are, and I also had the actual interview with my Mission President Van Alfen. It was very good and he confirmed that I will be in charge of traveling and migrations.  I know and understand the procedure, what I need to learn quickly is where and what programs to use for what.  So sad that I am a little bit rusty, it is harder to remember. 🙁It is not as simple as excel or google sheets. He also told me that once I learned that my duties will increase.

Today Saturday  is my P (Personal) day.  So I ended up going back to el Mercado to get some more things that I needed for the apartment.  And also to the "Open Plaza" is the Mall. And there is a Dollar City store, No, not everything is a dollar, but kind of good things and similar to Dollar Tree. I bought several things there that I needed. I didn't think I was going to buy that much, so I didn't get a shopping cart, and I regret it. Because my hands were completely full, I also bought detergent, softener and other heavy things not as big.  There was a big line and I brought my bag, because they charge for every plastic bag.  And between paying and bagging and the lines are all on one side, one after the other, I forgot to put 4 items in my bag.  Didn't realize it until I was home.  I had to go back and thank goodness the manager had it separated and gave it to me,  I ended up going to lunch in the mall and ate Peruvian Pollo a la brasa, (Rotisserie chicken) so delicious.

I have been cleaning and I was able to do my first laundry today.  Also I bought fish today, so happy about that, that particular fish is called "Bonito" 😋

Just so you know, my phone 801-380-3518 will be suspended as of Monday, so this is the way to contact me.

Tomorrow church time is at 9:00 am like I had back at home.  It is time to go to sleep, until next P day.

Love you all.
